Psychiatric Evaluations for Attorneys
Clinical Psychiatric Evaluations for Attorney-Referred Clients
Attorneys often encounter clients whose legal situation is complicated by mental health symptoms, psychiatric history, substance use concerns, emotional distress, or difficulty engaging consistently in care. In these situations, a timely referral to a psychiatrist can help the client better understand their symptoms, begin appropriate treatment, and receive ongoing clinical support.
Neal & Garrard provides psychiatric evaluations and treatment for adults throughout Washington through secure telehealth. Our role is clinical: we evaluate, diagnose, treat, and coordinate care. We do not provide forensic evaluations, competency evaluations, criminal responsibility opinions, or expert witness services.
Our goal is to provide excellent psychiatric care, a positive patient experience, and clear communication for attorneys, patients, and care teams.
Services We Provide
Neal & Garrard offers clinical psychiatric services for attorney-referred adults who need evaluation, medication support, or ongoing treatment.
Diagnostic Assessment
We provide careful psychiatric evaluations to better understand a patient’s symptoms, history, current functioning, treatment needs, and goals. When appropriate, we assess for conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, substance use concerns, psychosis, insomnia, and other psychiatric conditions.
Medication Management
For patients who may benefit from medication, we provide individualized medication recommendations and ongoing medication management. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s symptoms, preferences, medical history, and goals.
Ongoing Psychiatric Treatment
Many attorney-referred clients benefit from more than a one-time evaluation. Neal & Garrard can provide ongoing psychiatric care, follow-up appointments, medication adjustments, and clinical support over time.
Clinical Risk Assessment
As part of psychiatric care, we assess relevant clinical risk factors and recommend an appropriate treatment plan or level of care when needed. This may include safety planning, coordination with other providers, or referral to a higher level of care when clinically appropriate.
Coordination With Attorneys and Care Teams
With proper patient authorization, we can coordinate with attorneys, therapists, primary care providers, family members, or other members of the patient’s support network. We aim to communicate clearly and promptly while protecting patient privacy and maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries.
When an Attorney May Refer a Client
A referral to Neal & Garrard may be appropriate when a client needs psychiatric care but does not require a forensic evaluation or expert witness opinion.
Attorneys may refer clients who need help with:
A clinical psychiatric evaluation
Diagnostic clarification
Medication management
Treatment planning
Ongoing psychiatric care
Mental health stabilization
Support engaging in care
Coordination with an existing therapist or treatment team
Assessment of clinical risk as part of psychiatric treatment
This service may be especially helpful when a client has untreated or undertreated psychiatric symptoms that are affecting their daily functioning, communication, decision-making, relationships, work, housing, or ability to participate constructively in their legal matter.

How the Referral Process Works
1. Attorney or Client Contacts Our Office
The attorney, client, or authorized representative may contact Neal & Garrard to begin the referral process. Our team will help determine whether the referral appears clinically appropriate for our practice.
2. Patient Completes Intake
The client completes the required intake forms, consent forms, and privacy authorizations. If the client wants us to communicate with their attorney, a signed release of information is required.
3. Initial Psychiatric Evaluation
The patient meets with a psychiatrist for a comprehensive clinical evaluation. The appointment focuses on psychiatric symptoms, history, current needs, treatment goals, safety considerations, and appropriate next steps.
4. Treatment Plan and Follow-Up Care
When clinically appropriate, we provide treatment recommendations, medication management, and follow-up care. The treatment plan may include psychiatric medication, therapy recommendations, care coordination, lifestyle recommendations, or referral to another level of care.
5. Communication With Authorized Parties
With patient permission, we can communicate with the referring attorney or other authorized parties regarding attendance, treatment engagement, care coordination needs, or other clinically appropriate information.
